Carmen Oprea
Biography
Carmen is a registered and board-certified art therapist with Quebec and Canadian Art Therapy Associations, as well as the American Art Therapy Credential Board. She is currently a doctoral candidate in psychology at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and holds master’s degrees in art therapy from Concordia University and in fine arts.
Carmen supports children and adults who may be navigating anxiety, depression, trauma-related experiences, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and other emotional challenges.
She offers art therapy as a distinct professional service in which artmaking and reflective dialogue can support insightful self-exploration, particularly when experiences are difficult to express only verbally. With children, art can provide a playful and accessible way to communicate, explore feelings, and express experiences. With adults, she supports deeper self-awareness, reconnection with personal resources, greater confidence in their own capacities to overcome blockages and problems, and the development of new ways of navigating difficult experiences.
Approach
Carmen’s art therapy approach is strengths-based and informed by trauma-sensitive, cognitive-behavioural, acceptance and compassion, and creative perspectives.
Her work is grounded in curiosity, creativity in finding new perspectives and solutions, collaboration, and respect for each person’s lived experience, with visual language offering a second way to explore experiences that may be difficult to express in words.
Areas of Support
Children (4-13), adults of all ages
