ART THERAPY IN CHÂTEAUGUAY, QUEBEC

When Words Aren't Enough

Sometimes there aren’t words for what you’re feeling and that’s okay. Art therapy uses creative expression alongside therapeutic support to help you process emotions and experiences that are hard to put into words. No artistic skill or experience is needed.

UNDERSTANDING ART THERAPY

A Mental Health Approach, Not an Art Class

Art therapy combines the creative process with psychological and developmental knowledge, guided by Carmen Oprea, our board-certified art therapist (MA, MFA, ATR-BC, RCAT, ATPQ) — a mental health treatment, not an art lesson.

IS ART THERAPY RIGHT FOR YOU?

Sometimes, a Different Way of Expressing Yourself Can Help

Art therapy can be helpful at many ages and stages of life. It may be particularly supportive when emotions feel difficult to identify, explain, or talk about.

When Words Feel Hard to Find

Creative expression can provide another way to explore emotions that may feel confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to describe.

Children

For younger people, creating can sometimes feel more natural and less intimidating than sitting down and talking directly about difficult feelings.

Grief & Loss

Art can create space to explore grief, change, and experiences that may be difficult to communicate verbally.

Stress & Emotional Overwhelm

The creative process can provide a structured way to slow down, notice emotions, and explore what's happening internally.

Life Changes & Transitions

Art therapy may help when navigating changes in relationships, family life, identity, school, work, or other significant transitions.

Exploring Yourself Differently

You don't need to be struggling with something specific. Art therapy can also provide a different avenue for self-reflection, awareness, and personal growth.

There Is No "Right Way" to Do Art Therapy

You won’t be asked to draw perfectly, create something impressive, or explain every mark you make.

The creative process is approached with curiosity rather than judgment.

Depending on your needs and comfort level, sessions may involve different materials and forms of expression. You can explore at your own pace, with therapeutic support along the way.

What matters isn’t what the finished piece looks like.

It’s what the process helps you express, notice, and understand.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A Space to Create, Explore, and Reflect

Every person’s experience is different, and sessions can evolve depending on what you’re working through.

A session might include:

  • Choosing materials that feel comfortable or interesting
  • Creating freely or responding to a gentle therapeutic prompt
  • Exploring thoughts or emotions that arise during the process
  • Talking about your experience if and when it feels helpful
  • Connecting what emerges creatively with the challenges or goals you’re working through

Some sessions may involve more creating. Others may involve more conversation.

The process can adapt to you.

SUPPORT FOR YOUNGER CLIENTS

Another Way for Children to Communicate

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re experiencing.

They may know that they’re angry, worried, sad, overwhelmed, or simply “not okay” without knowing how to explain why.

Creative expression can offer another way into those experiences.

Through age-appropriate materials and therapeutic support, art therapy can give younger clients space to explore emotions and experiences without requiring every feeling to begin as a conversation.

Sometimes showing how something feels can be easier than explaining it.
